Portage Township Schools to host Summer of Fun enrichment camps


Portage Township Schools is hosting their PTS Summer of Fun Enrichment Camps for all PTS students. The programs will feature art, athletics, life skills, writing, space exploration, outdoor exploration and more.

There are four session remaining this summer running through August 1.

Session 4 will take place from June 24 to June 27 and will feature the Budding Authors and the Space Camp.

The Budding Authors camp is a lesson that will teach writing skills and help improve students skills in poetry, short stories and more. It is for grades 5-8 and will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Willowcreek Middle School.

Amy Burke, an English teacher at Portage High School, has a passion for educating students. She has a degree in English Literature and is currently in school to earn her principal license. Burke, who was a student at Portage, decided to come back and teach in the same rooms she once sat in years back. She is a firm believer that things will always work out.

When most people think of Portage Wrestling, the first word that comes to mind is success. Senior Jacob Moran has kept the successful tradition of prestigious high school wrestling alive. Having wrestled since he was 4 years old, Moran has accumulated great success.

“So far, my biggest accomplishment is becoming a high school National Champion in March of last year,” Moran said.

Moran also is a 2018 IHSAA State Champion at 106 pounds. He is ranked #1 in the state at 113 pounds, and also is ranked nationally.

The River Forest academic team has always had a good reputation, being one of the few teams from a low-income community with consistent overall scores year after year. Though they have never been able to bring home the spell bowl state championship, this year had a golden opportunity to change school history.

On October 29, 2018 the academic team traveled to Lowell High School to compete in the Indiana Academic Spell Bowl Area competition where they received a score of 69. This crowned them area champions for the first time in school history.
